Epic Waffle Fail

If you're thinking this is a picture of an epic waffle fail, you'd be right. I was betrayed by a new recipe last night.

While flipping through an old cookbook, Burt Wolf's "Eating Well", I came across a recipe for some oatmeal waffles. The batter seemed to have all of the necessary ingredients, and I was intrigued by the mix of whole wheat flour, cornmeal and rolled oats. But, darned if they weren't a squirrel-y bunch of waffles. They all wanted to stick ... even though I have a non-stick waffle iron.

Eventually, I got it right and we did dine upon waffles and Irish bacon for dinner last night. They were tasty, but I'm not going to offer the recipe. The batter was a bit too thick and I have a feeling it needed more fat. I'm going to play around with it before I post it here, because I do so love cornmeal in my waffles.

In the meantime, I will direct you to two other waffle recipes that recently peaked my interest. The first is Astra Libris' Perfect Whole Wheat Waffle ... these are the waffles I should have made! And the second is a delicious looking Multi-grain Waffle found on 101 Cookbooks - which boasts the addition of poppy seeds for a unique twist.

So, have you had any epic failures lately? Do tell. Hungry Diva wants to know.

Bon appetite!

  1. I can't help but think that those crunchy lil' waffle pieces would taste good sprinkled over a bowl of ice cream with some syrup and whipped cream. MMMMMM.

  2. Daaaaaaaahling, I am ALWAYS having failures in the kitchen. Why do u think I've attempted making macarons about 20 times? Have you forgotten the infamous turdaroon?

  3. Skippy Mom - what a great idea to use them over ice cream ... instead, I threw them to the birds! LOL

HH - I'm LOLing with you too ... I do indeed remember those macaroons!

  4. Ah, not so much fails lately as little disappointments - you know where you have this really great idea about some flavours coming together and then, well, they just don't? Still, it's always forgotten about when you hit the jackpot with something that works - I'll be tuning back in when you finally get to post your killer waffles-with-cornmeal recipe :)

  6. haha you're too funny! I had a waffle fail a few weeks ago and posted it too. I also had a commenter recommend eating over ice cream. Isn't it funny how the idea never occurred to me THEN? I was just so upset. hehe

  7. Fear not, Diva dear. It may just be a recessive gene for bad cooking (inherited by me???) that surfaces now and then and is quickly pushed to the back of the pool by the many good cooks in your family who have generously donated theirs. I know that great dishes are just around the corner!

  8. I tried a highly recommended Hungry Girl pumpkin brownie recipe and failed miserably - tried to be good but it tasted like chocolate pumpkin goo. You basically mix a cake mix and a can of whole unflavored pumpkin and get a delicious high fiber lo cal treat - NOT! Yuck!

  9. Oh too bad about the waffle fail! I am sure that you will come up with a much better version with some tickering.

  11. Aw, sorry about those waffles :( A few weeks ago, I tried to make mango ginger muffins and they were completely inedible - they never baked through and fell and were thrown away in the garbage. Tonight's vanilla muffins though were a success so I feel like I redeemed myself in the muffin department :)
