Best of Diva: Mascara Edition

Today's dip into the archives isn't so much a recipe as it is an edict. You'll see what I mean. One year later and its every bit as true and still makes me laugh. Hopefully it'll bring a smile to your day too. Be sure to stay tuned for Thirsty Thursdays tomorrow - I'll suspend my retrospective and will offer a new and wonderful beverage for your consumption!

Bon appetit!

Plump 'em, don't clump 'em! (tm Covergirl): June 4, 2009

So what's all this about mascara you say? For one thing, I love it and can't live without it. If I'm not wearing it there's a problem: I'm either very sick or very dead. Either way, call 911. For another thing, you should be wearing it too. I mean all of you, all the time. You know who you are. If you look in the mirror and can't find your eyes, then get thee to Sephora post haste! If you're a man and you're reading this - then, ok, you get a buy. If you're a gay man reading this - then call me, we'll go for drinks and dish about all things Bravo. I'm not kidding, I need someone to share my Bravo-love ... but I digress.

The Diva is talking mascara because she's a former make-up artist who's never lost her cosmetics jones - and because she won't always have a new recipe to post. Sure, the cooking/healthy eating/dieting stuff is the main focus of the blog, but can't a Diva have a little fun?! They've taken my Doritos but they'll have to wrestle the mascara wand from my cold, dead hands.

Currently I'm wearing a combination of two mascaras. I need both length and volume so for the first two coats I use: Lancome's L'Extreme. Its magical! It picks up every little lash you've got and gives great definition. For the last coat I'm currently liking Clinique's Naturally Glossy. Its on the dry side, which helps prevent clumps, and does a good job of building volume.

I'll be posting make-up tips and product reviews from time to time and I hope you'll enjoy them as much as the recipes. I want to look good and feel good ... and I want you to look good too ... because if you don't the Diva will know and she *will* mock you. ~wink~

More recipes later. For now, what's your favorite mascara and why?

Cool post :) I didnt know u used to work in makeup, thats fab! You should do cosmetics posts more often. I love makeup (though I rarely ware any). Sometimes I forget that I have other interests besides food :D I think since I became a foodie I really dumbed down a bit. I used to be into art and literature, now Im only into donuts. Whats happening to me?

I use Clinique's Naturally Glossy too! That reminds me I need to go get a new one soon!

I love wandering at Sephora. My favorite mascara is the Great Lash (waterprof) from Maybelline. It's very inexpensive and very efficient compared to others like Shiseido.

I remember this post. It's a classic! Thanks for re-running it, Diva. I think you and I would probably go at it like pit bulls over the last tube of mascara on the planet. LOL

Life...EXAGGERATED

I also remember the mascara post of old and still think it is relevant - after all a Diva is not just about the food.

I'm having mascara fatigue...not that I'm going to stop using it, god forbid, but that I can't seem to find one that I really like. I'm going to try these two that you suggest...wish me luck!

This was a great post and helped all women of a certain age to find a good mascara and makeup to use. Not to mention the laughs! Thanks, Diva!

I've been a Coke-bottle-bottom-glasses wearing geek since 1st grade! My eyes have always been hidden behind frames and wearing mascara was an exercise in constantly wiping stuff off the lenses. So no favorite mascara for me (lipstick is my can't-leave-home-without-it item!)

Last year, I started wearing contact lenses and yikes! My eyes are so small and blah - made me want to put my spectacles back on.

But I'd love to start wearing eye makeup. Any tips for making tiny Asian eyes look a little bit bigger? (Mascara, shadow, liner, etc.?)

HH - Yes, many, many years ago I was a make-up artist. I worked for Lancome in the Macy's Herald Square store. It was fun. Being a foodie can be all-consuming so I do know what you mean! LOL

5 Star - Love the Naturally Gloss ... and it is glossy too! :)

Jackie - Welcome! I agree, wandering Sephora is one of life's great pleasure ... can be expensive though. So much temptation!

Mom - OMG, you're so right, we *would* go at it like pit bulls! LOL Let's hope it never comes to that. ;)

Deb - I'm glad you enjoyed the repost ... kind of fun to look back and, yes, I'm still clutching that mascara wand just as tightly as ever. LOL

Jill - let me know how you make out. I really, really like the Lancome L'Extreme. Its good enough all on its own so you probably don't need two different kinds. I like excess. LOL

Pixelgal - always glad to provide some laughter. :) xoxoxo

Tangled Noodle - good questions! I would def. recommend mascara - both of these brands are good and reliable. I would also suggest using an eyelash curler prior to the mascara. It may seem like a torture device, but it curling your lashes will help to open your eyes up and make them appear larger. I use one and it really does make a difference.

Lastly, if you're using eyeliner, try lining just your upper eyelid alone - meaning no liner on the bottom of the eye. Start with a thin line on the inside of the lid and make the line a bit thicker as you move to the outer lid. This, too, will make the eyes appear larger.

Isn't it ironic that the "glossy" one is dry? But-- I share your love for mascara and usually use a combination of two as well. For the first coat I usually use a dried out one to separate my lashes, then a super-lengthening one like l'oreal (I think) telescopic. So great! Have missed you girl!
