Xagave Nectar + Cookbook Give-Away

I'm one day behind again - and that couldn't be helped. The temperature was 103 here yesterday and I was feeling every bit of it. As it happens, my beloved computer is in the only un-airconditioned room of my home ... so now you see why my posting has been so erratic of late. I simply can't take the heat.

Its not much better today, so I'm going to keep this short and sweet ... literally, sweet, because the good folks at Xagave Nectar have generously offered to sponsor a give-away this week!

The makers of Xagave reached out to me after my post on the blackberry bundt cake and asked if I'd like to run a give-away and, naturally, I said yes.

One lucky reader will have the chance to win a package containing one 25 ounce bottle of Xagave Premium Agave Nectar and a copy of their marvelous cookbook: "Delicious Meets Nutritious." If you're new to cooking and baking with agave nectar, this is the book for you! Its chock full of recipes for every meal of the day, nutritional information, and a handy conversion chart for replacing the sugar in any recipe with agave nectar.

To get a better idea of this marvelous cookbook's range, just take a look at the free recipes offered on Xagave's site ... Brie Stuffed Chicken, Cherry Chocolate Chip Cookies, luscious Spinach and Red Pepper Dip - if those don't tempt you, I don't know what will?!

Rules of Entry are as follows:

1. To enter simply browse the free recipes section at Xagave Nectar, then come back and leave a comment here telling me which recipe you'd like to try. You must complete this task in order to be eligible for the prize.

2. To gain a second entry, follow me and leave me a comment letting me know that you do. If you are already a follower, leave a comment letting me know.

3. To gain a third entry, Tweet about this give-away - then come back and let me know you've Tweeted.

One winner will be chosen by random number generator and the contest will close at midnight on Tuesday, July 13th. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, July 14th.

The contest is open to U.S. residents only and you must be willing to email me your name and address so that Xagave may send your prize directly.

Good luck and stay cool!

Green White Elephant Exchange!

Two posts in one day is pretty unusual for me, but its a big day! Laura, of Hey What's for Dinner Mom?, decided to host a blogger's gift exchange this year ... only this one has a little twist. Instead of purchasing a gift for another blogger, we were charged with re-gifting our assigned recipient! Hence the name: Green White Elephant Exchange ... its green because we are recycling unused items of our own and giving them a new home. How cool is that?

Laura asked us each a few personal questions, so the gift-givers could learn a little bit more about their intended recipients, then she paired us up. Fittingly, my recipient is Mo Diva of Food Snob. I sent her my never-used copy of Cooking at De Gustibus - a wonderful cookbook from my collection that is brand new. I also passed on to her a necklace, given to me as a gift and never worn, that needed a good home. I hope you enjoy them, Mo Diva!

As for me, I was delighted to find out that my secret gift-giver was Heather, of Heather in SF, whom I met this September at BlogHer Food! Such a special treat to be given a gift from a new friend ... and what a lovely gift too! You can see my treats pictured above: two beautiful, plush Christmas hand towels with adorable appliques, and a sweet little stocking ornament that Heather knit herself!

I don't know if you know this about me, Heather, but I truly cherish all things Christmas and that goes double for ornaments. In fact, when we decorate our tree, we don't just hang the ornaments all willy-nilly - no sir! Instead, I tell the story of each ornament before it gets hung. They are stories we've heard again and again, but that doesn't matter - its the telling that matters, the remembering that counts. From now on, you will be part of that tradition. I will think of you each year when I decorate, with the towels and the ornament, and our story will be told. Thank you, Heather, you couldn't have chosen a better gift for me!

You can read about the rest of the Green White Elephant Exchange via the links on Laura's post today. I can't wait to see the rest of the big reveal!

And a big thank you to my friend Laura as well. What a lovely experience this has been and I hope we'll make it a tradition. :)

Love, Hugs and Happy Holidays to you both!

Cheers!

Cookies, Cookies and More Cookies

'Tis the season to be baking! Or, at least it is for many of us. I don't know about you, but I'll be up to my elbows in flour today, this weekend, and for the better part of next week too. Perhaps I'll even find some time to Christmas shop in between batches!

Fear not, new recipes will be forthcoming - including the recipe for the butter cookie cut-outs you see above - but today is a work day and I will be chained to the stove.

Meanwhile, there are some wonderful cookie events going on around the web and I thought it might be nice to link you to them here ...

Lottie + Doof's 12 Days of Cookies - Today is day 9, but you can revisit the previous entries from any of the cookie posts. The entries are spectacular: Dorie Greenspan's Linzer Sables, Marlow & Son's Shortbread, 101 Cookbooks' Sparkling Ginger Chip Cookies - to name but a few!

5 Second Rule's Virtual Cookie Swap - You may recall that my Hungarian Horns won Cheryl's Virtual Swap last year. I didn't enter this year, but I'm dying to see the finalists. There are some wonderful entries in the mix. You can vote for 3 of your favorites here - and be sure to tune back in and follow Cheryl as she bakes her way through the swap to the eventual winner. Its bound to be a tasty ride!

Steph Chow's Post-Holiday Cookie Exchange - Steph is organizing an actual cookie exchange! Participants have until January 16th to mail a dozen or two cookies to their recipient, which is nice for those of us without the time to make an extra batch this month. If you'd like to participate, rules of entry are listed here.

And, if you're looking for a fun and festive way to package your homemade treats this year, check out Dana McCauley's Food Blog today for a wonderful suggestion!

Are you hosting a cookie even this season? If so, shout it out in the comments so I can add you to the links here.

This Friday I'll be featuring a classic butter cookie recipe from Gourmet Magazine that is sure to please ... one giant batch of dough that can be spiced and mixed several different ways. Its a double duty cookie you won't want to miss. Stay tuned!

Finally, today is the last day to enter my Lavender Syrup Give-Away, you have until midnight tonight. The winner will be announced tomorrow afternoon. Until then ...

Happy Baking!

Feed the Peep!

Fresh off the heels of the wildly successful Eating Your Words blogging event, Jen at Savor the Thyme has launched another hilarious contest ... this one involving Peeps! And this time there's a prize. The lucky winner will receive a copy of "Best of the Best: the best recipes from the 25 best cookbooks of the year." You can play too! Entries must be sent to Jen by midnight, April 5th. You can read the rules here.

I do so love a web-tacular event and I had about a million ideas for this one. Evidently my dark sense of humor won out. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves ...

A Day in the Life of a Peep:

Just hatched ...

Off to work ...

Uh oh!

**For the record, no actual Peeps were consumed while filming this entry ... at least not by me. The husband is a fan - I am not. I may be known to eat the occasional Peep once a year, but I prefer the day old variety - when the Peep is slightly crisp ... Papa Diva will back me up on that!

I did, however, eat the omelet. Word to the wise - Peep flavored eggs will not soon become the latest taste sensation.

Why not hatch a few ideas of your own and join the fun? Thanks so much for setting this up, Jen, I had a blast. Can't wait to see the other entries!

Bon appetit!

Have Pants, Will Travel ...

These pants have been making their way to sisters all across the web and I'd like to offer a belated, heartfelt thanks to Jen from Savor the Thyme for passing on her Sisterhood Award to me. I'm so honored to receive this from you, Jen, as I'm a huge fan of your blog. Thank you so much!

The Rules:

1. Put the logo on your blog or post.
2. Nominate at least 10 people whose blogs you enjoy.
3. Link to your nominees within your post.
4. Let them know they have received this award by commenting on their blogs.
5. Share the love and link to this post and to the person who has nominated you for the award.

I think we're all tired of hearing my thoughts on rules. If you don't know I'm a rule breaker by now you're going to have a tough time with the pop-quiz. ~wink~ In that same vein, if I've passed on this award to you, feel free to break the rules yourself. Pass it on, don't pass it on, give it to 5 people, give it to no one ... its your choice. I'm giving this award to you free of obligation and solely as a token of my appreciation of your work. All of you make my days more delicious and this is just my way of saying thanks!

So sit back, relax, loosen your belt and get ready for an exceptional feast as I present my cherished Sisterhood Award to the following delicious foodbloggers, in no particular order:

Cookie Brochette of Lightbulb Cuisine - Cookie, simply put, I am in awe of your work. The quality and variety of offerings are nothing short of amazing! Folks, be prepared for a mind-blowing experience, and no small amount of chuckles, when you click this link and let Cookie B. show you the way - The Way of The Bulb.

Chrystal and Amir of The Duo Dishes - Mouthwatering morsels, an adorable couple and talk about your sassy writing ... this blog has it all. This is one Duo with whom I'd gladly dine ... frankly, I'm hoping for a party invitation! Now, I know this is kind of a girly award - sorry for that Amir - but if the pants fit, I say wear 'em and let your yumminess shine!

Michele of Life, Lightly Salted - I've said it before and I'll say it again ... for my money the coolest foodblog on the block. I just love everything about Life, Lightly Salted - and what's not to love? Great look, delicious - real - food, beautiful pictures and some awesome music recommendations as well. Still hoping to catch up with Michele "in real life" and when we do, I know its going to rock!

Steph of Step Chows - Another tasty blog that's got it all. Beautiful layout, endearing prose and most of all ... wholesome, hearty, healthy food. Steph, I love what you're doing and thank you for doing it. Still hoping to find time to make your whole wheat pasta ... and just about everything else you post. So glad I found your blog!

Laurie of That's Not What the Recipe Says - How can you not love a blog with a title like this? And ... last week she made Monte Cristo sandwiches for dinner ... need I say more? Again, I love everything about this blog - from the gorgeous background to Laurie's warm and friendly tone - oh, and the photoghrapy rocks too. Delicious!

Doggybloggy of ChezWhat? - Yeah, I know, he's a dude. Somehow I think this dog is just cool enough to take my pants ... wait a minute, that doesn't sound right?! Rewind. What I mean to say is that in my world there are two coolest blogs on the block and ChezWhat? is as cool as can be. Go, read. Read it all, you'll see. To say its unique would be to damn with faint praise. In short, I dig this dog and you will too.

Tangled Noodle of Tangled Noodle - Great name, huh? I'm a relatively new reader of Tangled Noodle and I like what I see. Yummy recipes, charming, thoughtful posts and Noodle's spirit is so warm and friendly I just know you'll become as tangled in her web of deliciousness as I have.

Kristy of The Wicked Noodle - Yay, more noodles! Although she's relatively new to the scene, and I'm new to her blog as well, this site is so jam packed with great stuff I don't even know where to begin. Its chock full of useful tips, great recipes, yummy food news and more.

Deb of Kahakai Kitchen - I can't recall who tipped me off to this fabulous blog, but I'm so glad I found it. You've already heard me speak of the wonders of Deb's weekly Souper Sundays event - which I adore, but there's so much more than soup simmering in Kahakai Kitchen. Delcious and healthy food, fun blogging events like Tyler Florence Fridays ... and chocolate, lots and lots of chocolate. Who could ask for more?

The Heavenly Housewife of From Donuts to Delirium - She may be across the pond, but The Heavenly Housewife and yours truly share a common bond of Divaliciousness. She describes herself as a "Dita Von Teese / Martha Stewart wannabe struggling between gorging myself on Krispy Kremes and trying to squeeze myself into fabulous clothes" ... intrigued? I know I was! ... and still am.

And that's my list of ten. I've tried to highlight some new blogs here, among some of my old favorites. In truth, I could have passed this on to everyone on my blogroll ... but this post doth grow long and my fingers are tired. Suffice it to say, if you're on my roll, I think your delicious!

Bon appetit!

Round up!

I'm unexpectedly AFB - Away from Blog - today, so this post will be short, yet 0h-so-sweet. The dynamic duo of Tangled Noodle and Savor the Thyme have done a magnificent job in recapping the Eating Your Words Challenge entries ... and the results ... well, they've left me speechless! The creativity and variety of entries is absolutely stunning!

The entries are posted in two parts. The first is here on Savor the Thyme, and part two is here on Tangled Noodle. I urge you to take a look and marvel at both the quality of the entries and the brilliant posts that re-cap them. Well done ladies, well done! My hat's off to all the challengers. I am thoroughly impressed and so honored to have be included in this fantastic event. Thank you both so much for all your work in presenting it. No easy task, I'm sure. I had a blast!

As if that weren't enough for one day, I'd also like to direct your attention to Deb's Souper Sundays round-up on Kahakai Kitchen. Her carrot bisque looks so yummy and luscious that its got my mouth watering ... and that's just the beginning. What follows is the best of the soups from around the web this week. So cruise on over, get out your soup pot, and get inspired!

I hope to be back with a new recipe tomorrow or Wednesday, at the latest. For now, take a spin through those links and see what's cookin'.

So, what was cooking in your kitchen this weekend? Curious Diva wants to know.

Bon appetit!

Eat Your Words ...

Last month, Jennifer from Savor the Thyme threw down the gauntlet. She told us to eat our words ... literally. It all started with this post on Tangled Noodle and from there the words kept rolling off our collective tongues and onto our cutting boards ... or, in my case, cookie sheets!

You can play too, the rules are as follows:

1. 'Write or spell' using food or drink and create a blog post about it until midnight on Friday, March 6th. Any previous blog posts you already have where you've created a 'written'-inspired dish or drink will be accepted.

2. Blog about your creation, including photos, and add a link back to Savor the Thyme (http://savorthethyme.blogspot.com) and Tangled Noodle (http://tanglednoodle.blogspot.com).

3. Send an e-mail titled 'Eating Your Words' to eatingyourwords09@cox.net with the following information:
  • Your name
  • The name of your blog
  • The name of your dish or drink
  • Your food blog name and the link to your entry, including pictures, by midnight March 6, 2009
You can still participate even if you don't have a blog at all. Simply e-mail the above information minus the blog details and we'll include it in the round up.

4. Please keep it clean! Appropriate humor is always welcome.

The prize? Adoration of millions, the chance to flaunt your creativity and, let's be honest - some link love! The contest closes at midnight on Friday, so hurry up and get cooking ... or is that spelling?

I whipped up a batch of cherry chocolate macadamia biscotti for my entry ... and, big surprise, I spelled my own name. I'm nothing if not a shameless self-promoter. ~wink~ I only wish the photo was of better quality, but it was late and I was tired and there were one million biscotti crumbs all over my kitchen. Not to mention that the husband was scarffing down the warm cookies so fast I thought I'd never get a snap off. So there you go.

Will post the biscotti recipe at a later date. For now, why not hit up those links and take a look at the other entries. Tangled Noodle will be posting a round-up of all the entries once the challenge closes.

So, what would you spell and how would you do it? Curious Diva wants to know.

Bon appetit!

P.S. - Don't forget ... the winner of my Great Granola Give-Away will be announced tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned and good luck to all!

Bringing Back the Meme ...

Hektik Lyfe from The Silent Podium tagged me with this little meme earlier in the week. The task is to post ten things I love that begin with the letter B. We're free forming the rules on this one, so rather than tagging people - if you'd like to play, leave a comment and I'll assign you a letter. You can link back to me in your answer post. This one has been making the rounds on the web in recent weeks and its fun to see such a wide variety of answers. Try to contain your excitement while I list mine ...

Ten Things I Love That Begin with the Letter "B":

1. Breakfast - in all is glorious forms ... even pumpkin waffles.

2. Bacon - need I say more? Of course not.

3. Blondie - The group ... what can I say, I'm generationally predisposed.

4. Baked Potatoes - and they don't even have to be laden with bbq and cheese, but it doesn't hurt.

5. Brown Bread - of the Irish variety, I'll post a recipe for it next month.

6. Butter - Real Butter. Salted, unsalted, its all good.

7. Brightblack Morning Light - didn't see that one coming, did you? (Some audio here if you're interested.)

8. Baking - obviously.

9. Being a Diva - I know you saw *that* coming.

10. Blogging!

Not to mention blue cheese, bubble baths, boxty and, no doubt, someday ... Botox. If you've got a blog and want to play, shout out in the comments.

So, what's your favorite thing that begins with the letter B? Bodacious Diva wants to know!

Housekeeping: Linkage Edition

First off, a belated and truly heartfelt thanks to The Vintage Kitten for bestowing her Fabblog award on me! Quite chic, isn't it? This means a lot coming from The Vintage Kitten because for my money she has one of the most interesting and stylish blogs around. If you've not been to her site, do have a look - she's funny, talented and altogether delicious. Her photography is quite something too. Kitten and I are of the same ilk ... we're both rule breakers of a sort ... so I'm not going to post any rules about this here either. I will, however, pass my award along to the following individuals:

Food for Laughter, Life, Lightly Salted, Jamjarsuperstar, Uncommon Artistic Endeavors and The Duo Dishes. Enjoy your award and feel free to pass it on, or not, as you see fit. I could have given this to literally all the blogs on my read list ... but that could take days! Frankly I think you're all fabulous. Really!

Earlier in the week, The Duo Dishes tagged me with the Luck and Resolutions Meme, in which you're supposed to list four things that you wish for in the new year and four resolutions. Well, you all know how I feel about resolutions ... but I'll make an exception in this case and offer four food related resolutions for the New Year.

Four Things I Wish for in 2009:
  • Health and happiness for my family, my friends, myself and all my readers.
  • That the economy will make a miraculous recovery and all those who lost jobs in 2008 will find even better jobs in 2009.
  • Peace on Earth - yes, its a bit Polly Anna, but I'm sincere in my wish.
  • More travel, more vacations. This one is contingent upon the husband, of course, but a girl can dream!
Four Food Resolutions for 2009:
  • Form a better relationship with my crock pot. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
  • Continue my exploration of chickpea flour.
  • To try more new restaurants, to branch out instead of sticking with the tried and true.
  • Continue to eat well with an eye toward health, and continue to create new, healthier versions of old favorites.
And there you have it, my slightly off-beat resolutions for 2009. Once again, I'm going to break the rules ... if you're reading this and would like to use it on your own blog - consider yourself tagged and resolve away! No need to make them food related either - that was my change.

So, what are your food resolutions for 2009? Hungry Diva wants to know.

Bon appetite!

Diva, The Interview ...

There's a fun little meme-like deal floating around the internet this week and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to join the fray. I first saw this interview thang on Argentum Vulgaris's blog: Tomus Arcanum and I was most intrigued. I left the requisite comment on his blog and the following are the interview questions he's chosen for me. I must say it was great fun to do and I hope you'll enjoy reading the answers as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Be sure and check out any one of Argentum's eight! blogs. His blogs are fascinating and with a selection like that there's something for everyone. Personally, I'm partial to Tomus Arcanum ... just love that name, and Things that Fizz and Stuff. Always something interesting going on in Argentum's world. Check it out!

Without further ado, I now present: Diva, The Interview ...

1. I like your blog a lot. Why do have such a fascination with food?

Because its so tasty! I think I've always been fascinated with food on some level. At first my interest was very basic, making cookies or baking with my mom. Somewhere in my teens I started reading cookbooks, sort of as a hobby, and my interest grew. I came down with Chicken Pox when I was 19 - horrid! by the way - and I spent much of the recuperative period devouring The Joy of Cooking ... one of the 1970's versions and I still have that book. (Please note, I was not 19 in 1970. This is critical information. I am not *that* old.) That led me to prepare my first meal on my own - for my family ... some kind of chicken (naturally) and a pasta dish out of the Joy of Cooking that I still make to this day. (Pixelgal, do you remember that??)

I moved to New York shortly thereafter and had to cook for myself for real - and I loved it. While the husband was in law school, I spent nearly every weekend in the company of Julia Child, the Galloping Gourmet, Jacques Pepin and even The Frugal Gourmet. They taught me how to cook. I'd watch all their shows, then plan and execute elaborate meals based on what I'd seen. Such fun! It was during that time that I learned to make my own pasta and a really killer Bolognese sauce. That all morphed into a long time devotion to Gourmet and Bon Appetite magazines. Both of which I'd read cover to cover, before getting out my shopping cart and getting busy recreating the wonderful dishes featured on their pages. I credit PBS and both those magazines for fostering my obsession with food and dining ... and creating the need for me to become The Diva on a Diet! I learned too well and became a victim of my own good cooking.

I'm still fascinated by what and how we eat - though these days I'm more interested in eating well with an eye towards health.

2. By your own confession, there will be a lot of chicken, why?

Ah chicken, my beloved chicken. Who knows why I'm such a fan of the fowl?! I could probably eat some form of chicken or turkey every single day and never grow tired of it. Its lean, can be prepared in a myriad of ways, and its just plain delicious. I've eaten chicken in some of the best restaurants in the world. Prior to visiting Germany for the first time I made sure to learn the word for chicken breast: huhnerbrust, so I'd be prepared. (And P.S. it was never on *any* menu!)

Frankly, its become something of a joke amongst my husband, family and friends. If there's chicken on the menu, odds are I'll order it. Eh, what can I say ... I'm a cheap date!

I will add that at home, I'm a poultry snob. No Perdue or Tyson for me. Its got to be some kind of organic, hormone-free, grain fed bird or nothing at all. Those weird, yellow, chemically enhanced birds really freak me out and I steer well clear if possible.

3. We all know about the many things you like in the culinary world; tell us some of the things you hate, or at least dislike somewhat?

I think you all know how I feel about fish. I can't stand the stuff. With the exception of shrimp, I prefer to leave the sea creatures where they belong ... in the sea. I will force myself to eat it every now and then, because people keep insisting its good for me, but I don't really enjoy it. I loathe and detest all forms of organ meat. Can't even bear to think about it really. ~shudder~ And, if I'm being honest, I'm not much of a fruit girl. I love apples, grapefruit and pears ... but that's about it. I'll willingly choke down a few strawberries in season, maybe a handful of super fresh blackberries, but I could go a long time without fruit and not miss it. ~hangs head in shame~

I'm actually a very picky eater ... but getting better as I grow up. Part of the fun of cooking for me has been exploring new ingredients and finding out that things like pumpkin really aren't as evil as I'd thought. I went a long time with a very short list of likes and it pleases me to know I've made great progress over the years and expanded my horizons. There are few things I won't try at this point ... and they are limited to the weird and gross!

For the record, I'd also like to state that there is only one vegetable I cannot abide: cucumbers.

4. You have displayed an innate skill with the camera, tell us about it?

This one actually made me laugh. I'm delighted that you think so, Argentum ... but I think my food photography sucks! I'm trying to improve though and plan to buy one of those nifty light boxes so my shots will at least be decently lit. I'm also in search of a food photography class - but have yet to find one.

I will admit to having some skill with the camera in other areas of still photography a/o vacation and nature shots. I've taken many shots over the years of which I am proud and have some hanging in my office. I owe any talent in this area to my parents, both of whom are exceptionally skilled behind the camera. We've got strong artistic genes in the family and if you could see their work you'd know what I mean.

I will also admit to having a background in art. I was a double major in college and have a degree in Studio Art and Art History. I know I've got a good eye for color and composition ... I just don't know much about getting the best out of a digital camera. I'm much stronger with the old fashioned cameras ... hang in there with me ... I'm learning. :)

5. If there is something you really dislike, or that really peeves you about the blogosphere, what would that be?

In all honesty I'd have to say that I've been pleasantly surprised by the blogosphere. There's a real sense of community out here (there?) and that was something I didn't expect to find. The food blogging community has been particularly welcoming. I've received nothing but encouragement so far, and have "met" some really great people.

Certainly, I'd hoped to create a kind of community when I launched this blog, but I had no idea how far it would reach ... like all the way to Brazil with your blog, or across the pond to Scarlet's. That's pretty damn cool! And much like Sassy said in her interview the other day, I had no idea how much I'd care about this whole thing ... or how many hours I'd need to devote to it!

If I had to come up with a peeve, or something negative, I guess I'd say that its something of a disappointment to me that I can get 40 hits a day ... and only 2 comments. I wish more people were willing to at least pop into the comments section and say hello. I don't expect prize winning prose, but it would be nice to know who's out there reading me. Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone? ;)

Thanks so much Argentum, I think you've got a bright future ahead of you as an interviewer. Such great questions. I had a blast doing this! And may the deity of your choice forever continue to bless you for *not* asking my weight, or any other diet related questions. ~wink~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you’d like to play along, just follow these instructions:
* Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me.” (I won't post your email address in the comments.)
* I will respond by emailing you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
* You will update your blog with the answers to the questions. Be sure you link back to the original post.
* You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
* When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
Cheers!
Meanwhile, enjoy the afternoon. I'm knee deep in writing holiday cards today and will not resurface until they are done! (This warning is for *me*, not you. LOL)
Bon appetite!
Tag, I'm it ... again ...
I'm busy pretty-ing up for the husband's holiday party tonight ... which, of course, means no cooking ... whee! The party will be held at Craft. I'm hoping to sneak in a few photos from the event as the folks at Craft really do know how to put on a party. If its anything like last year's spread, we're in for a treat. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, Argentum Vulgaris has tagged me with this "One Word" meme. You can read his answers here. The rules state that you must answer each question with only one word. Here goes:
1. Where is your cell phone? Purse
2. Where is your significant other? Work
3. Your hair color? Professional
4. Your mother? Amazing
5. Your father? Awesome
6. Your favorite thing? Family
7. Your dream last night? Forgotten
8. Your dream/goal? Fame
9. The room you’re in? Guest
11. Your fear? Death
12. Where do you want to be in 6 years? Here
13. Where were you last night? Bookclub
14. What you’re not? Conservative
15. One of your wish-list items? Chocolate
16. Where you grew up? Connecticut
17. The last thing you did? Breakfast
18. What are you wearing? Velvet
19. Your TV? New
20. Your pet? Cats
21. Your computer? Laptop
22. Your mood? Festive
23. Missing someone? Yes
24. Your car? Black
25. Something you’re not wearing? Antlers
27. Your summer? Humid
28. Love someone? Many
29. Your favorite color? Silver
30. When is the last time you laughed? Today
31. Last time you cried? November
The other part of the rules states that you are to nominate up to five people to take the challenge. Remember, no tag-backs and if you've been stung from another quarter - you're free to decline the invitation.
I'm tagging the following fellow bloggers: Miss Caught Up, Sassy, Scarlet, HektikLyfe from The Silent Podium, and Astra Libris from Food for Laughter. And, as per Diva Rules, you are under *no* obligation to complete the meme. Have fun if you do!
For the record, that's Diva cat Lucy above ... tagging a cute little vicuna I picked up at Ten Thousand Villages last weekend. I think she was about to bite off his head - but I stepped in and broke them up. Back off, Luce, the vicuna's mine!
Have a great afternoon!
Notes and Notions ...
I'm late to the game in thanking Miss Caught Up for passing her lovely Kreative Blogger Award to me last week ... thank you, Amanda! I'm honored to be among those you've mentioned and return the compliment to you in equal measure!
I'd like to pass my award to the following creative and wonderful bloggers:
The Vintage Kitten - love that name and her blog is really beautiful, a feast for the eyes.
Vickie at Uncommon Artistic Endeavors - for her crafty and delicious blog!
Astra Libris at Food for Laughter - for her wonderful spirit and her yummy posts and photos.
And, Michele at Life, Lightly Salted - because she just rocks and I want to make everything she posts!
There are certainly others I'd like to highlight, if time would allow ... but this Diva is on a tight schedule today, and likely tomorrow too. I will be back with a new recipe late tomorrow but wanted to take the time to thank Amanda today and pass on my award.
In other news, I've decided that those cookie muffins from last week aren't so bad after all. We somehow managed to finish off the batch ... and in the end I'm not sorry I made them. I would make them again, only next time I'll add some nuts, skip the chocolate and allow them to be the muffins that they really are. I think they'd be a wonderful addition to any breakfast or brunch.
Lastly, here are the results of this year's pumpkin carving adventure:
I deviated from the norm this year and did a different kind of eye ... and the husband carved his into the mask from "Scream" ... he had a little help though ... I drew the face for him. Sssshhh, don't tell!
The roasted seeds are delicious and we have so many of them we might be eating them until next year!
I'm off to have lunch with a friend, then its on to hunting and foraging for dinner provisions. So, what's for dinner in your world tonight? Hungry Diva wants to know.
Bon appetite!
Tag, I'm It ... Twice ...
Two of my favorite virtual peeps, Sassy and Miss Caught Up, tagged me with a meme on the same day last week. So in a rare weekend appearance of The Diva, I now present to you - six random habits/things/quirks about me. I'll give you a minute to recover from the thrill of anticipation while I list the rules. ~wink~
1. Link to the person that tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
4. Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs.
5. Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website.
6. Let your tagged peeps know once your entry is UP.
  • Although I love to bake and am well-known for my creations, the feel of raw flour on my hands really freaks me out. Touching flour provokes in me the same reaction as nails on a chalk board. ~shiver~
  • I put my mascara on *before* my eyeshadow. This is contrary to every rule in the make-up book and I don't care! It works for me.
  • I'm a little freaked out about this one ... but ... I may be developing a fondness for "Coldplay." Believe me, I'm every bit as shocked and dismayed by this as you - but I've downloaded an alarming number of Coldplay tunes in the last few months ... ok, two. But that's two more than I ever imagined I would. Stay tuned for future developments.
  • I may need a tweleve step program for my coat fetish. My love of coats knows no bounds and borders on addiction. The husband may actually disown me if I buy another ... and yet there was this cute little red number in the Gap last week ... help me!
  • I drink tea in the morning, not coffee, and I'm picky about the brand. I prefer Barry's Irish Tea - Gold Blend. I like it very dark and very strong, with just a touch of non-fat milk, and it must be served in a HUGE mug ... no pansy-ass dainty teacups in Divaland. I cannot and will not leave the house until I've had my morning tea.
  • I bat left and throw right ... all the great hitters do. ~wink~
Although that's six, I'm going to add a seventh ... I believe rules are made to be broken - and I'm breaking the rules a bit here on this meme. I'm not going to associate a tag on this - because half the people I would have hit have done it already. If you're reading this and want to use it yourself - consider yourself tagged and go for it - but do let me know if you do. I really enjoy reading the responses to these things. Its a fun way to get to know each other. If you don't want to use the meme, by all means leave a few of your quirks in the comments ... curious Diva wants to know!
I've also received this lovely award from the always charming Miss Caught Up - and I must say the feeling is mutual. Amanda, you make me smile everyday. Thank You! On a similar note, I'm passing on this award to everyone who's reading or has ever read my blog. I'm immensely grateful to all of you and want to let you know how much you make me smile. Consider this a great BIG thank you for all of your encouragement and I say that with the utmost sincerity.
That's a broad interpretation of the rules to be sure ... but then again, the Diva has always been something of a rule-breaker ... and I'm guessing you knew that already.
Cheers!
A Big Thank You ...
I'm finally getting around to posting this and regretting that it took so long. Michele from Life, Lightly Salted passed on her E! Award to me last week and I am supremely grateful. It means a lot coming from her because I respect her work so much. Michele's blog is an absolute treasure and its probably the coolest looking blog around to boot. I really, really dig both her vibe and her recipes. If you have yet to check her out, do so immediately - you'll love it. She's a wonderful writer and her photos are outstanding too. Michele, I'm so pleased we've found each others' blogs and I look forward to meeting you in person someday soon. Thank you so much!
In the spirit of the award I'm going to pass it to the follow people who, like Michele, are on my must read list:
1. Vickie at Uncommon Artistic Endeavors - I love Vickie's spirit and enthusiasm and her recipes are both charming and creative. I've marked many of them as "must make" and need to get around to doing so! Her blog is entirely delightful!
2. Scarlet at Jamjarsuperstar - because this blog is most excellent indeed and I'm thrilled to finally repay Scarlet's many kindnesses. You rock, Scarlet, and so does your blog - you're definitely teaching me a thing or two about new music.
3. Jo Boston at Taking Over the World One Bite at a Time - I love Jo's spirit too and her zest for a good meal and a good time is completely infections. Every time I read her, I wish I was having dinner with her. She makes me hungry for both good food and good fun.
4. Amanda at Miss Caught Up - Again, because of her wonderful spirit. Much like her posts, Amanda is unique and interesting and one does get "caught up" in reading about her life. She's always got something interesting going on and if she weren't on the other side of the country I know I'd be joining her for happy hour some time!
Obviously my must read list is much longer than this, but many of you already have this badge ... though I'd give it to you all over again. One of my greatest joys in having started this blog has been finding a whole new community out here in cyberland and getting to know you wonderful bloggers. Its all been delicious fun and that's what this Diva is all about!
Foodbuzz Publisher Community Launches
I'd like to offer my congratulation to the good folks at Foodbuzz.com on the official public launch of their site which happened this morning. Foodbuzz is the only online community with content created for foodies by foodies and I'm proud to be a part of this delicious, talented and rapidly expanding community.
Here's a snippet from their official press release:
"It’s here, it’s here! Foodbuzz, Inc. is unbelievably excited to announce the official launch of the Foodbuzz Publisher Community, which is comprised of more than 1,000 global food bloggers, our “Featured Publishers.”
At launch, the Foodbuzz community successfully broke into the top ten rankings of internet destinations for food and dining, according to Quantcast, a global internet rating service.
In addition, the inaugural 24 Meals, 24 Hours, 24 Blogs event—which aims to showcase 24 Featured Publisher blog posts around the globe in a 24-hour period—kicked off on Sept. 20 and successfully displayed to online food enthusiasts an international, virtual street festival of food and diversity.
"Food bloggers are at the forefront of reality publishing and the dramatic growth of new media has redefined how food enthusiasts access tasty content,” said Ryan Stern, Director of the Foodbuzz Publisher Community. 24 Meals, 24 Hours, 24 Blogs captured the quality and unique local perspective of our food bloggers and shared them with the world. The event illustrates exactly what the future of food publishing is all about—real food, experienced by real people, shared real-time.”
Foodbuzz is proud to be the only online community with content created by food bloggers and rated by foodies, offering over 20,000 pieces of new food and dining content weekly. Members can vote for their favorite pieces of content (recipes, photos, blog posts, videos, restaurant reviews) by “buzzing” them up to the top of the daily menu of submissions.
While the site is logging over 14 million monthly page views and over three million unique monthly visits, the Foodbuzz blogger community is concurrently growing at a rate of 40 percent per month, driven by strong growth in existing partner blogs.
"Our goal is to be the number-one online source of quality food and dining content by promoting the talent, enthusiasm, and knowledge of food bloggers around the globe,” said Ben Dehan, founder and CEO of Foodbuzz, Inc. “Foodbuzz is like the stock of a great soup, allowing bloggers to contribute content and subsequently interact in a rapidly growing, online niche-specific community.”
If you've been enjoying my blog and have yet to take a spin around Foodbuzz.com, I suggest you do so. Its a wonderful resource, full of all kinds of tasty blogs, yummy recipes and excellent restaurant reviews. If you're a food blogger and have yet to join ... what are you waiting for? Thanks, Foodbuzz, and here's to your continued success!
What's in Your Handbag?
Its time for a Monday meme. I stole this one from Michele at Life, Lightly Salted ... and yes, I've dumped out the contents of my purse for all the world to see. Festive, isn't it?!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here are the rules:

(This meme was started by Mimi, Queen of Memes )

Find a safe quiet place free of significant others, nosey meme makers, priests, nuns, all things religious and men in general. (If you're a guy just reverse this process to male and tell us about your wallet, tool box, briefcase or metro sexual accessory.)

1. Dump the contents of your handbag in a pile
2. Take a photo of your handbag and the contents
3. Be brave and explain to your fellow bloggers what lurks inside the handbag.
4. Tag others who might want to embarrass themselves
5. Answer these questions:

Describe the contents of your handbag:

One over stuffed wallet, my pool/gym I.D., my gym lock, a MetroCard, one black hair elastic, my Sephora Beauty Insider Card, one gray eye-liner, blue Bic pen, 3 lipsticks, one powder compact, one black bobby pin, my cell phone, a pocket flashlight card, my Diva business cards, a memory stick, Orbit Sangria Fresca gum, Pepto Bismol tablets, Tylenol Severe Sinus tablets, Advil Cold & Sinus tablets, a couple of receipts, a bottle of Pepcid (which also contains some regular Advil and one Celebrex), assorted sugar free Ricola throat drops, a bunch of gum wrappers, and one Band Aid.

What's the most important thing in your handbag?

My wallet ... and maybe the lipstick and compact. Ok, the MetroCard's essential too.

What's the most embarrassing thing in your handbag?

The assortment of meds. I'm a walking pharmacy! I only take the Pepcid on a regular basis - the rest is "just in case." I like to be prepared.

What's the smallest thing in your handbag?

The bobby pin.

Is there anything illegal in your handbag?

Not that I'm aware of.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not going to associate a tag with this meme ... and rightly so ... not everyone is willing to offer the contents of their purse to the world. The Diva has nothing to hide. Do feel free to steel this and post it yourself if you're brave enough and so inclined. Let me know if you do, its fun to snoop!
Lastly, I must note for the record that I do not use the word "handbag" - I'd be more likely to use "purse" or "pocketbook" ... which, with my Connecticut/New York accent comes out sounding like "pock-a-book!"
So, what's in your handbag??? And which word do you use? Curious Diva wants to know!
Friday Meme and Menu Musings ...
Its a dreary day here in the city. Rain soaked and wind swept, and what I want to do is spend the day in my pajamas, curled up with a good book. What I need to do is figure out what to do with the remainder of that monster turkey breast taking up space in my fridge. My first instinct would be to make a yummy pot-pie, but the necessary double crust is none too Beachy - so that's out. I'm not a great fan of turkey soup, so that's a no-go as well. I'm thinking chili. What could be more welcoming that a piping hot bowl of spicy, savory chili topped with the sharpest cheddar imaginable and oozing with rivulets of melting sour cream? (Non-fat, of course!)
I think I'm sold! Unfortunately, this will necessitate some hunting and foraging on my part ... which will necessitate a clothing change. While I may be prone to wearing the kitten ears from time to time, I've never shopped in my pjs ... and I'm not about to start now.
While I'm out battling both the crowds and the elements, do peruse this meme that Scarlet tagged me with last week. I'm winging it in terms of creating the chili, so stayed tuned for a full report and the resulting recipe on Monday.
Four Times Meme:
Instructions: Copy/paste the meme into your blog, type in your answers and tag four people on your lists! Don't forget to change my answers to your own.
(A) Four places I go over and over: my office, the pool, Sephora, various supermarkets.
(B) Four people who e-mail me regularly: the husband, my mom, my sister in laws, Talbots!
(C) Four of my favorite places to eat: at home, Modern Apizza, Nice Matin, El Faro ... this list could go on and on, but I'm sticking to the rules.
(D) Four places you'd rather be: at the beach, in Paris, in bed, at a Rolling Stones concert.
(E) Four TV shows I could watch over and over: Project Runway, Top Chef, Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, Seinfeld.
(F) Four people I think will respond: Sass, Miss Caught Up, Jo Boston, Having It Girl.
Today's picture was taken at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, at twilight last Thursday. It was a beautiful evening and the gardens themselves were magnificent. I hope to return in day light sometime.
Now, I'm not sure who will or will not respond - but those were the four names that came to mind. If you're not on the list, feel free to pick a few and answer in the comments. Curious Diva wants to know ... especially as relates to your four favorite places to eat!
Have a great weekend and make it Divalicious!
Its a Love Thang ...
The charming and ever so lovely Scarlet of Jamjarsuperstar and Scarlet's Culture Garden has graced me with this really sweet award. Thank you so much, Scarlet, the feeling is mutual!
As with all awards there are certain rules to follow:
1. Link to the giver.
2. Nominate up to seven other fab blogs and link to them.
3. Leave messages announcing their rise to greatness. (Note - You may have been given this already, so that means you are a GREAT blogger.)
I would like to award this to the following fellow bloggers who are my daily reads no matter what and I genuinely enjoy their blogs. Here goes:
1. Scarlet - of Scarlet's Culture Garden (ok, this may be breaking the rules, but she has two blogs and I want to return some love to her.)
2. Sassy - of Life of Luxury
3. Miss Caught Up -of Caught Up In Life
4. Michele - of Life, Lightly Salted
Of course there are dozens of other blogs that I love and read daily - you know who you are - but I wanted to pass this one to some that I haven't previously tagged in some way.
Rest assured a new recipe is forthcoming soon. We're having a bit of a crazy day here in Divaland and I'm hoping to find the time to write. Stay tuned.
Happy Friday!
This is a picture of the grape arbor in Mama and Papa Diva's yard ... and it has nothing to do with today's post ... other than for me to ask Pixelgal: how's that jelly coming along? ;)
Its Friday and I have one million errands to do before what will be a busy weekend. Also, we had left-overs last night so its time for something quick and easy here. I stole this meme from Jo at Taking Over the World One Bite at a Time. Click the link and you can read her answers - then scroll down for her report on the recent slow-food event in San Francisco. Looks like it was amazing! If you're a fellow blogger, you can steal this from me and link back your answers in my comments if you like. If you're not a blogger, pick a few interesting questions and sound off in the comments. Hungry Diva wants to know!
Sweet or salty?
Salty
Which ingredient(s) do you use most?
Garlic, chicken, zucchini
What’s the cooking sound you most love?
Not really cooking, but I love the whistle of my tea kettle. Conversely, when I'm deep in the throws of holiday baking, I'm tortured by the sound of my kitchen timer. It haunts me in my dreams and by the time the last batch of cookies enters the oven I'm ready to stick a fork in my ear.
What’s your favorite cooking smell?
The smell of homemade sauce and meatballs simmering on the stove.
What are the qualities you most admire in a dish?
Texture and great, balanced, flavors.
What is your most treasured possession in the kitchen?
My Kitchen Aid mixer. (See above holiday marathon baking reference.) It was a birthday present from my mom some years ago and it completely revolutionized the baking madness.
What is a dirty word in your kitchen?
There are several: frying ... never do it, fat ... try to avoid it, liver or organ meats ... no, just no!
What are afraid to do in the kitchen?
Nothing that I can think of, I'm pretty intrepid.
What won’t you eat?
Liver or any organ meat, oysters, snails, goat, black pudding, lamb, several kinds of fish ... shall I go on?
Have you ever lost your appetite for a food you once loved?
Not that I can recall.
Have you ever had a change of heart involving a food you once disliked?
So many that I can't even begin to list them.
If you could choose one historical or living cook to make you a meal right now, who and what would it be?
She is neither historical nor living, but I'd have to say my grandma Pam. She's historical to me, to my family, so I guess that counts. I want her to make me ziti and meatballs or her homemade pizza. There's not a single celebrity chef who could hold a candle to either of those dishes. Period.
Who are your favorite cookbook authors/food writers?
Is it wrong if I say myself? (Kidding, I'd probably say Dorie Greenspan.)
What is your favorite food-related word?
Crisp!
What is your favorite food-related scene from literature or the movies?
Weird, but I can't think of an answer for this one. I'm stumped.
What’s your favorite food-shopping errand or journey?
This only happens when we're in CT ... but it happens *every* time we're in CT ... going to Liuzzi's market.
To which country would you move for the food?
I'd stay here in the USA because we have so many great food options. I love to travel, but I'm always happy to come home. If pressed, perhaps Italy ... but after spending 3 weeks there I was soooo ready for some fat-free yogurt and a salad!
What’s your poison?
Poison as in a good thing - chocolate, pasta, New Haven pizza.
Poison as in a bad thing - you know I'm going to say the sea creatures. See also above referenced organ meats. ~brrrrr~
What’s your standard outfit in the kitchen?
A t-shirt and jeans ... or sometimes ... ok, often ... pj bottoms!
You wish to die with what in your stomach?
I plan to live forever so this question is irrelevant.
If heaven exists, what do you hope they have on the menu?
Grandma Pam's ziti and meatballs. Sensing a theme here?
If you came back as a fruit or a vegetable, which one would it be?
Neither, I want to be a lap cat.
What are you craving right now?
A vacation!
Have a great weekend, all ... and make it Divalicious!
